Traffic congestion is only increasing in the Austin, Texas area and their community needs a technologically advanced solution to solve it. At the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, that is their forte. They have built the 183A Toll road in Cedar Park and Leander and it has completely transformed the communities around it for the better. hey also built the U.S. 290 toll road between Austin and Manor which was able to triple the capacity of the previous road. It has also greatly improved the nontoll lanes.
Mobility Authority strives to innovate and the new MoPac Express Lanes that is underway will use technology to assist on traffic flow. Congestion cannot be entirely erased, but it s possible to get it under control. Variable tolling rates can synchronize supply and demand to help maintain a more predictable flow of traffic.
Mobility Authority is working on creating roads that are considered to be “smart” and that can detect a car that may be going up the ramp in the opposite direction, for example. Mobility Authority has joined forces with Metropia in order to create a mobile traffic app that can provide current alternative routes for its travelers. They are also working with Carma, a carpooling app, to encourage commuters to share their rides. Right now there is a shocking percentage of 900,000 empty car seats daily caused by drivers tat do not carpool. If that can be eliminated or at least lessoned, then congestion would go down substantially.
Mobility Authority doesn’t have all the answers, but they have partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation, and the counties of Central Texas in order to try and reduce traffic jams in the area. They have a personal stake in the cause because after all, they share the roads, too.
Mike Heiligenstein, Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, and has served the Mobility Authority since 2003. During that time the agency has developed its very first toll road 183A and has worked hard to implement technology into its traffic solutions. Mike Heiligenstein’s a strong advocate for pedestrian and bicycle facilities and has worked very hard to ensure that such facilities were made possible.
Mike Heiligenstein has spent 30 years as a public official and is very focused on infrastructure projects. He has been a part of many projects, including many transportation projects and major parkland acquisitions.
