Mark Hutchinson always finds himself most comfortable where the wild things are. His dedication to wildlife began in the outback of his country of birth, Australia. His fondest memories are of tending sheep, riding horses and living the life of a young sportsman. The Corpse flower is a very unique species that blooms only once every three to five years. It’s that time again, and the students and faculty at Orange Coast College are eagerly anticipating the blooming of the Corpse flower. Viewing is now open to the general public to see the flower blossom into a deep magenta spike-like plant that is full of magic, mystery, and life.
The flower earned its name from its unpleasant smell and deservingly so. Most people who smell the flower say that it smells like a dead corpse. The smell is caused when beetles pollinate inside of the flower. Although the smell isn’t so pleasant, it is nonetheless a spectacle when the flower blooms. People from the community and beyond come together to see the flower, named LittleJohn, bloom.
Although the event is free, spectators are encouraged to pay a $3 entrance fee to be a part of the viewing. The money raised from the viewing is used to fund the horticultural program at OCC. Visitors are encouraged to pay an entrance fee of $3 to watch as the flower blooms.
Orange Coast College is the third-largest community college in Orange Country, with approximately 25,000 students enrolled in the two-year courses offered at the college. OCC was founded in 1947, and has quickly grown into a respected college. Many of the students attending OCC later attend prestigious colleges and even private facilities.
